description

The pPod Consortium where recently selected as prefered developer to deliver the second Carbon Challenge site identified by English Partnerships. The scheme is part of the Department of Communities and Local Government’s aim to accelerate the house building industry’s response to climate change.

The Carbon Challenge is designed to fast track the creation of a number of new communities designed to meet the highest level of the Code for Sustainable Homes as well as English Partnerships key requirement for high standards of quality design and improved space standards.

Browne Smith Baker is project managing and designing the bid for the pPod Consortium, which is made up of Morris Homes – a national volume house builder and Gentoo – the Sunderland based social housing provider and management company.

The pPod Consortium was so called as it epitomizes everything it represents. It strongly believes in marrying green principles in design and development with cutting edge technology, while working as part of a team to create something special.

At the heart of the Consortium is the desire to plant and harvest the long-term needs of the community in which it works, as well as sustaining the highest levels of environmental innovation, design and performance. To do this the pPod Consortium acknowledges it needs to live and breathe sustainability in the widest sense.

The development is expected to deliver circa 450 dwellings, all specified to 'Level 6' of the Code for Sustainable homes, and will incorporate an element of mixed use. The total site area is approx. 7 ha (17 acres).
