A multi-million pound recycling plant is planned to be built on Tyneside. Newcastle firm Graphite Enterprises has drawn up plans for the facility in Blaydon, Gateshead. If the proposals are approved by Gateshead Council, the £20m Derwenthaugh Ecoparc will create 61 jobs.
The 2.1 hectare site is at the old Universal Bedding and Upholstery factory, on Derwenthaugh Industrial Estate, in Derwenthaugh Road. The A1 is about 150m west of the land. It will be a purpose-built plant designed to handle and safely treat household, commercial and green waste. The premises will have a biological and mechanical waste treatment facility.
The site will be able to accept 250 vehicles a day and will be able to treat around 160,000 tonnes of household waste, 80,000 tonnes of commercial waste and up to 60,000 tonnes of green waste per year.
The project also plans to have an education facility including a classroom for 30 children and a safe viewing glass to actively invite schoolchildren to learn more about the process and raise awareness about how waste is handled.
