Browne Smith Baker won the commission to design this prestigious high specification £6 million housing scheme of 91 luxury apartments on the banks of the River Tyne in an open competition with over twenty other designers.
The imaginative scheme has seven stepped blocks ranging in size from three to six storeys. The apartments range in size from one and two bedroom apartments to three bedroom maisonettes. The penthouse flats have curved profile ceilings internally and command the best views across the River. Secure private car parking is provided in a semi sunken basement accessed from a private service road.
The apartments are based on a catalogue of energy conservation principles, from simple and effective design elements such as extra insulation, orientation for passive solar gain to low level heating and effective, but not excessive ventilation. The scheme has been an enormous commercial success. The first block of apartments were sold within 10 minutes of going on the market. The penthouse apartments are valued in excess of £250,000.
