The building is an extension to an existing nursery, which provides training, care and social facilities for mothers and children in this deprived area of Teesside.
The shape of this competition-winning design is in the form of a carousel. This reflects Redcar’s history as a seaside resort. The building comprises a large crèche, training room, kitchen, office and toilets all arrayed around a south-facing, external play area.
The contemporary looking building has many attractive features including a tensile covered external play area, cedar cladding, poly-chromatic curved brick walls, and brightly coloured windows, patent glazed screens and doors. The vibrant colour scheme continues on the inside of this light and airy building.
The building envelope is well insulated and has under-floor heating as a safety feature for the children. The internal lightweight stud partitions are designed in such a way that they can easily be repositioned should the need arise in the future.
