The commission of a comprehensive refurbishment programme for the college commenced in 1998 and due for completion in August 2005. Comprising of a 4-storey block accommodating Science, Art, Drama and Media Studies with lift access to all levels. The new building is linked to the existing with an Atrium and external bridges.
Computer generated images were employed extensively to explain proposals to staff and students in order to explore room use options and finalise the design. Images show two views of the Atrium space showing the bridge links and also the blank end wall used for video projections produced by Art and Media departments. Other phases of the refurbishment programme included an extension to the Library space, involving roofing over an existing internal quadrangle and replacing the lost garden area with a grass roof over. Also included was a natural ventilation system using Monodraught Windcatcher chimneys.
All works were carried out whilst the building as fully occupied with minimal disruption to the College timetable. Views show the interior of the library space, a glazed corridor created out of an external balcony area and the grass roof area with Windcatcher chimneys.
