The Practice
Browne Smith Baker, one of the largest practices in the north of England, has gained a reputation for producing innovative and cost effective design and management solutions whilst providing our clients with high quality professional services. A period of controlled and sustained growth has resulted in a mature, modern Practice with four offices, an established track record of completed projects and credibility in the research and development of all building types. The size of the Practice and our office locations ensures that all of our clients receive the resources and expertise necessary for the successful completion of their projects. Browne Smith Baker operates as a Limited Liability Partnership. As a multi-disciplined organisation the practice is proud to include its interior design division, Portland Design which offers extensive experience in the commercial, leisure, healthcare and retail sectors. With our associated company BSB Project Services Limited we provide comprehensive professional project managment, visualisation, access consultancy, cdm coordination and energy assessment services to our client.

The Practice recognises the need to continually adapt to these processes and invest in the resources necessary to provide our clients with a high quality professional service. The commitment of the Practice to provide this consistently high quality of service is borne of a shared desire to offer a highly responsive and accountable service to clients, taking care to meet budgets and programmes in buildings of quality and humanity.

Each office of Browne Smith Baker offers a wide range of professional construction and design management services which, when combined, provides our client with comprehensive solutions to their needs within the built environment. The practice prides itself on a hard-earned reputation for providing all clients with the highest level and quality of service. Browne Smith Baker is dedicated to the delivery and creation of a quality product and service. Under this commitment, all our four offices have now gained accreditation under ISO 9001:2000 for Architectural Services, Project Management and CDM Coordination. Obtaining ISO 9001:2000 reinforces Browne Smith Baker's commitment to a fully documented set of procedures and working standards that are continually improved and validated.
Our Environmental Policy
It is the policy of Browne Smith Baker LLP to work in a positive and proactive manner to minimize the practice’s direct and indirect affect upon the environment and to assist clients to do likewise. The practice believes that communities in the third millennium will have to live in equilibrium with their surroundings, and will strive to deliver design solutions that can make this possible.
Browne Smith Baker is committed to a continuous improvement model and recognizes that environmental legislation, issues and priorities will evolve. In response to this the senior management of Browne Smith Baker will annually review recent developments and the environmental aspects of the organization and where necessary amend this policy to improve performance.
The primary objectives of this policy are to:

- Minimize the use of natural resources

It is the aspiration of Browne Smith Baker to deliver high quality and sustainable design. The importance of an integrated design approach cannot be overstated if this is to be achieved.
The list of general principles below, while not exhaustive, will provide a framework for Browne Smith Baker to deliver on its aspirations:
- Design for flexibility to maximize a building’s longevity
- Minimize the use of virgin materials
- Encourage and maximize the use of reclaimed or recycled materials
- Promote durable and low maintenance specification
- Encourage the use of local materials and those with low embodied energy
- Promote good design that responds to the environmental needs of a specific site
- Incorporate passive solar gain and natural ventilation
- Encourage the use of BREEAM and target ratings on Very Good and Excellent
- Encourage the use of the Code for Sustainable Homes and target ratings of 3 and above.
Browne Smith Baker will endeavour to set regular targets and objectives to promote and monitor the primary objectives listed above. These will be monitored and reviewed at regular intervals over a 12 month period , and measured against the agreed targets and objectives. Where necessary corrective actions will be agreed and implemented.
